Personalised Reading Instruction
Cater for students struggling with reading due to Dyslexia, Language Related Learning Disorders, Autism, 2e, ADHD and other learning difficulties relating to the wide range of neurodiverse experiences and challenges of our students.
At Active Reading we identify the reading strengths & needs of our students and work together to develop and implement focused Reading Programs that ensure their reading skills develop and improve.

How much do lessons cost and how long do they go for?
Lessons cost $60 and go for 50 minutes.
Do you teach at the student's home?
No, Active Reading is well resourced to cater for a wide variety of students needs. Programs are comprehensive and stay on site.
Do I pay for the first Lesson?
No, the first lesson is a meet & greet and we will run through a series of activities and games and have a conversation about your child's learning. This is to determine whether or not we can cater for his or her needs. There are a lot of snake oil salesman running around the special education space presently charging large amounts of money, making big promises and putting pressure on parents to sign up for programs. I believe as a core philosophy that the relationship between educators, parents and students should be based on trust that we are all doing the right thing by each other and that includes being honest about if Active reading is able to help your child. This saves valuable time, money and helps avoid frustration in what is often a very bewildering time in parents and students' lives. If it is determined that Active Reading is not appropriate for your child (although this often doesn't happen) we often try to guide parents and families in the right direction to help them on their journey.
Do you Teach Maths and History?
No at Active reading we only teach students struggling with reading skills learn to become proficient at reading.
Do you teach specialised spelling programs?
In short no. Spelling skills are taught in lessons but only to support foundational reading skills.
Do you teach MULTILIT, MINILIT, The Orton-Gillingham (OG) Approach or Reading Recovery?
No, the above programs are often taught in schools and recommended by various advocacy groups. Most of the students that come to Active Reading have had experience with the above programs but have had little success with them. Every student's learning needs are different and so reading programs and the skills and knowledge taught to students is very much more individualised.
Are the Programs taught at Active Reading Researched Based?
Yes, all elements of programs, resources and goals are are derived from extensive research.
Do you give students homework?
No, however we do allow students and parents to borrow books and learning games and activities that consolidate what area of need is being target in lessons.
All lessons are planned before the students arrive and build on previous skills learned in prior lessons.
We have a wide variety of resources to support student's interests and preferences.
Some students and parents prefer us all to work together in lessons. This helps empower parents to understand more clearly their child's needs and more effectively help their children at home.
